Tips for Seniors to Avoid Slips and Falls This Winter

Canadian winters can be challenging for all of us. However, seniors can be especially vulnerable to slips and falls when the snow and ice begin to accumulate.

In fact, falls are one of the most common causes of injuries seniors sustain during the winters, but luckily falls can mostly be prevented with some due diligence.

Here is what you need to know about preventing slips and falls this winter for seniors.

The right shoes & boots for winter

Making sure you wear the right shoes or boots this winter that provide good traction can really make a big difference when walking down those slippery sidewalks or roads. You can also opt to add spikes/cleats to your boots as they can be purchased to slip on the bottom of your existing footwear.

Stay active

While being active during the winter can be tough – especially if you prefer to be active outside – staying active can help prevent slips and falls. Being active can help keep your bones and muscles strong and help with your balance. Staying strong can definitely lower your risk of falling this winter.

Keep walkways clear

Whether you do it yourself or hire a neighbour, keeping driveways and sidewalks clear of snow and ice will go a long way to keeping you safe this winter. Additionally, make sure you keep the salt handy, so you can avoid slipping as you walk to the car or garage.

Stay connected

If you are heading out somewhere, make sure you let your family or friends know where you are going so that they are able to check in on you if anything happens. You may also want to invest in a fall alert so that if a fall happens, there is an easy way to alert family members or emergency services.

Ask for help

If you are uncertain about going somewhere or feel like an area is particularly slippery, do not be afraid to ask for help in getting to where you need to go. Your family and friends want you to be safe and do not want to see you fall – they would much rather you ask them for help!
